The St Nicholas Bell Tower is immediately adjacent to the church of the same name and was built in Baroque style in the 18th Century. The bell served as a fire alarm. The observation deck is located at a height of 65 metres and is thus one of the highest in Prague.
In 1891, the last town crier, whose function was to ring the bell in case of fire and to show the direction of the fire from the window with a red ribbon (or a lantern at night), moved out. Afterwards, it was occupied by painter Jan Vochoč. From the beginning of the 1950s until the fall of the communist regime, the State Security Agency maintained a observation post in the tower from which they chiefly monitored movements at the embassies of Western countries.
