The House at the Black Madonna is a unique Cubist building with distinctive geometric elements designed in 1912 by architect Josef Gočár as a commercial and office building. Gočár also designed the interior of the café, the built-in furniture and the bar counter made of dark stained oak wood. The 17th-Century sculpture of the Black Mother of God, which gave the building its name, was moved from the original development and incorporated into the northeast corner. The house has been listed as a national historical monument since 2010.
The Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague has a permanent exhibition of Czech Cubism on two floors, which presents this style as a one combining free and applied art and architecture. The exhibited ensembles and solitary pieces of furniture, along with interior accessories made of ceramic, glass and metal, represent a cross-section of works by the most important Cubist artists.
