Winternitz's villa is one of the exceptional buildings of interwar architecture in the Czech Republic, and it is the last villa of Adolf Loos, which was built during his lifetime. Prague lawyer JUDr. Josef Winternitz had the villa built in 1932 for himself and his family. Due to their Jewish origin, they were confiscated by the Nazi authorities in 1941, and Josef Winternitz and his son Peter were murdered in the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz. Wife Jenny and daughter Suzanne survived the concentration camp, but never returned to the villa. During the rule of the communist regime, the villa housed a kindergarten, and after the Velvet Revolution, it was returned to the descendants of the original owners as part of restitution. They reconstructed the villa to its original state at their own expense and opened it to the public in 2017. Lovers of architecture and history can see short-term exhibitions as well as a permanent exhibition that recalls the fate of the original inhabitants and the villa.
