Did you know that...

The casemates are an ingenious system of corridors created at the turn of the 17th and 18th Centuries as part of the strategic fortifications. They are more than 1 km long. The largest of these passages is called the Gorlice. Choose one of the current circuits The casemates to the Gorlice Hall (EN) or St. Martin's casemates (EN):
THE CASEMATES TO THE GORLICE HALL
A guided tour consisting of one part of the underground corridors (casemates) and the largest of the underground spaces so-called the Gorlice Hall that houses six original sculptural groups from the Charles Bridge.
ST. MARTIN'S CASEMATES
A guided tour of the Church of St. John the Baptist and the underground corridors of Martin's casemates. The tour ends near Leopold's Gate.

In the event of impending war, the Gorlice was to serve as an assembly point for troops, ammunition and food. In the last Century it served as an air-raid shelter, potato and vegetable storehouse. Today, six of the original statues from the Charles Bridge are located here. Various cultural events are also held in the space. The entrance to the casemates is located in the Brick Gate. The gate was built in the 19th Century and is a typical example of Empire technical construction.
