The Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague is one of the most beautiful buildings in French Neo-Renaissance style by architect Josef Schulz, built by the Chamber of Commerce and Trade in Prague specifically for the collections of the Museum of Decorative Arts founded in February 1885. The generosity of the museum’s patrons and supporters made possible the lavish decoration of the building and interiors, which were also designed by Josef Schulz. The first floor of the museum with its collections and public library was inaugurated in 1900.

The museum now manages collections of glass, porcelain and ceramics, applied graphics and photography, textiles, fashion and design, furniture, clocks, a collection of precious and common metals, precious materials, jewellery, toys and a wealth of written and pictorial documentation. The historic building, which for years served as an exhibition space and depository, ceased to meet museum standards at the turn of the millennium, so the Central Depository (2014-2016) was built, equipped with the latest technologies that guarantee the safe storage of half a million collectibles. Thanks to this, the historic building was able to undergo a demanding reconstruction and modernisation and now serves visitors in its entirety.
