Did you know that...

The Old Town Hall with the astronomical clock is located on the eponymous square and is one of the most valuable buildings in Prague. It was built in the 14th Century and is an exceptionally well-preserved example of Gothic architecture. The entire building is characterised not only by its rich figural and ornamental decoration, but primarily by the astronomical clock on the south side of the tower, the only one of its kind in the world. In the Town Hall you can visit the Romanesque underground, representative halls, a chapel with a unique view of the statues of the apostles, and lookout from the tower. The observation deck at a height of 41 metres offers is a unique view of the entire centre of Prague.

The 2nd floor houses the memorial Jiřík and Brožík Halls. The Jiřík Hall is named after the bust of King George (Jiří) of Poděbrady. The Brožík Hall serves as a meeting room and occupies one entire floor of the town hall over a height of two floors. It is named after the artist who created the two large-format oil paintings on canvas (8 x 5 m): Master Jan Hus before the Council of Constance and the Election of George of Poděbrady as King of Bohemia. The town hall’s underground areas document the early days of the Old Town. At the time, the city’s ground level was several metres lower. The Chapel of the Virgin Mary is located on the first floor of the town hall. Few people know that the chapel provides a glimpse into the bowels of the Prague astronomical clock’s mechanism.
