Did you know that...

Powder Gate dates back to the 15th Century and represents one of the most valuable Gothic buildings in Prague. This monumental tower served as a gunpowder depot, after which it takes its name, and was also the entrance gate to the Royal Route leading to Prague Castle. Today it is open to the public and the gallery at a height of 44 metres offers is a unique view of the medieval centre of Prague.

The first floor on the Celetná Street side is decorated with statues of George of Poděbrady and Vladislav II, with figures of Přemysl Otakar II and Charles IV on the other side. The second floor level features statues of Czech patrons and saints surrounding Christ on the east side, and the Virgin Mary with child on the west side. The facade facing Celetná Street bears statues of Adam and Eve, and statues of St. Peter and Paul on the opposite facade.

TIP: While you’re in the area, don’t miss the nearby Na příkopě Street shopping street.
