New Town Hall dates from the 14th century and it is characterized by a unique combination of Gothic and Renaissance. There is a very impressive view of the entire complex, as well as of the center of Prague, from the 70 meter tower. The tower with 221 steps, completed in 1456, no longer serves the purpose of a fire station. A permanent exhibition about the history of the New Town, the town hall and the adjacent Charles Square is now open in the former apartment of the towerman who once sounded the alarm. It also presents the oldest panoramas of Prague, which capture the form of Prague from elevated places bordering the entire Prague Basin. The exhibition consists of copies of historical engravings from the archive of the Prague City Museum.
The building is considered one of the most important historical buildings in Prague, not only architecturally, but also historically. It is a complex of several buildings, in which there are representative halls and a richly decorated chapel. Various cultural events are often held in the premises of the town hall.
