Did you know that...

The Basilica of Sts Peter and Paul was built in the 11th Century and today bears a Neo-Gothic appearance. In addition to the dominant towers housing a twenty-one bell carillon while the interior is richly decorated in Art Nouveau style. It is characterised by unique ornamental and figurative murals. One of the side chapels features a rare painting of Our Lady of Vyšehrad, called “The Lady of the Rain”. The church also has a treasury with an exhibition of rare liturgical objects and fabrics.

The capitulary and parish church was established by Prince Vratislav II in the second half of the 11th Century based on a model of the Roman Church of St. Peter and Paul, when the prince began building his seat at Vyšehrad as a deliberate counterpoint to Prague Castle. Legend has it that Vratislav supposedly carried 12 baskets of stones for the building’s foundations. In 2003, Pope John Paul II promoted the Vyšehrad capitulary church to a papal ‘basilica minor’.
